2008 Lenten Retreat with Dr. Peter
Bouteneff
"Living Tradition: Being Orthodox in the
Contemporary world,
and Being Contemporary in the Orthodox World"
This will not be a musical workshop, but Dr. Peter
Bouteneff, Assistant Professor of Dogmatic Theology at St. Vladimir's Seminary
is probably the only Orthodox theologian with a Bachelor's degree in Music from
the New England Conservatory. The retreat is entitled, "Living Tradition: Being
Orthodox in the Contemporary world, and Being Contemporary in the Orthodox
World"
Where: Orthodox
Church of the Holy Cross, Medford, NJ [Directions]
When: Saturday March 29 from Noon to 5:00pm
Two talks will be presented:
1) The role of dogma, truth and freedom in the daily life of a baptized
Christian in a Spirit-filled church.
2) Does the Church really 'address the modern world'? Or is it really
addressed by it? Does the Church matter in the contemporary world? What
does it have to offer?
This retreat will be based on his book, Sweeter than
Honey: Orthodox Thinking on Dogma and Truth (Crestwood, NY: SVS Press, 2006)
which the Holy Cross adult class has been reading during this past year. Thanks
to a special agreement with St. Vladimir's Press, a collection of passages from
Sweeter than Honey has been assembled for use as a Lenten reader. [Click

Lunch will be provided between the two sessions. Great vespers will be
celebrated immediately following the second talk at 5:00pm.
There is no charge for this retreat, but for the sake
of food preparation it would be appreciated if you would notify, Fr. John
Shimchick, pastor, in advance:
